Ben is the brawn and the brains that encompasses Markham powerlifting. He’s quick with a smile and his determination and focus will keep you motivated and pushing for more. He is certified in Crossfit Level 1, 2, kettlebell, and weightlifting. They are the experts for building strength in the primary compound lifts: bench press, deadlift, and squats. Here is a quick interview we did with Ben.
Why is fitness important?
I believe it really helps in your quality of life. How long you live or your longevity will be greatly affected by how fit you can be. It doesn’t get any easier but you can help by not making it any harder. I think it also gives you a great sense of accomplishment. Anything challenging is worth doing – the feeling you get when you accomplish something, when you overcome all the obstacles that had been holding you back – man, that’s a great feeling. I also believe that as you grow, as you accomplish more, it helps to build your self-confidence, not only in the way you look and feel, but in how you approach your next challenge.
What do you not like about the fitness industry?
If I could make any change it would be to put an end to the false information, the misleading details that make people hurt themselves. There’s too many unsubstantiated claims, partial truths out there, “Well, I read it on the internet, so it must be true” kind of thing. All this hype around, well, all this celebrity hype and with enough followers, it’s gotta be true, right? No. I studied. I work hard at my craft. I aim to help. I want to see someone achieve greatness. I don’t want to see them become a vegan because of a Netflix documentary or what a Kardashian said.
What makes you say that?
Sadly, this sort of thing gives people a sense of dissatisfaction and intimidation about fitness. It affects their health. It affects their life. What they need to do at that point in their life is to seek professional advice and support. We’re here to help. We want you to be the best you can be. For example, exercises from celebrity sources – the celebrities often only care about looking good and they have a particular body makeup with personal chefs to help them achieve their goals. That’s just not reality. Then there’s even more diet or nutritional information from sources on the nternet that are not rooted in human physiology or science. It can have disastrous effects.
Why is a Physiotherapist important?
Physiotherapy allows people who push themselves physically, to recover faster, and helps you to learn best practices to avoid further injury. It’s peace of mind knowing someone is there to help take care of you should you’re injured.
