What is Pelvic Health Physiotherapy?

By September 19th, 2025No Comments

This specialty takes a conservative approach to address the signs and symptoms associated with the tissues of the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor includes the muscles and ligaments that attach to the front, back and sides of the pelvic bone and sacrum (bottom of spine).

Pelvic floor muscles have several important functions in the body:

1. Physical support for bladder, genitals, uterus and anus. The pelvic floor holds these organs up within our pelvis!

2. Control of bladder and bowel function. The openings of these organs are located in the pelvic floor and optimal muscle function is important for keeping us continent and regular!

3. Stability of the lumbopelvic region by working with muscles of the low back, core and diaphragm

4, Sexual Function including erection and ejaculation in males and arousal and sensation.

HOW IS PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION TREATED?

The information collected in the assessment is used to develop a treatment plan that is customized to your unique needs and goals. Treatment can include:

  1. Manual Therapy – hands-on internal and external treatment to improve muscle activation and awareness and perform soft tissue release and joint mobilization
  2. Therapeutic Exercise – research shows that proper performance of Kegels needs to be confirmed by digital examination, verbal instruction alone is not adequate! Furthermore, these exercises are not appropriate for everyone!
  3. Electrical Muscle Stimulation
  4. Bowel/Bladder Routine Tracking and Re-training
  5. Education –understanding the influence of posture, breathing, psychological state, urinary and bowel hygiene, self care and diet and hydration on pelvic pain to improve symptoms

Let us help you regain control, improve function and optimize your overall health and wellbeing!
