Interview with Ritch Cruz of Elevation Martial Arts in Markham

By September 19th, 2025No Comments

At The Physio Spot, we pride ourselves in connecting to the health and fitness community in Markham and its surrounding areas. Educating our clients and web visitors about healthy choices and options to feel better is important to us.

We sat down with Ritch Cruz, owner at Elevation Martial Arts and Training Centre in Markham. We wanted to know his feelings on health, fitness, and what we could do to help promote Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for both kids and adults alike.

Thanks for spending some time with us, Ritch. To begin, why is fitness important?

Fitness is essential for your overall well being. Exercise makes you feel better. It gives you a better quality of life. It helps keep your body strong and healthy, while at the same time keeping your mind sharp and releasing stress. It improves your mood, promotes better sleep, controls your weight, and combats health conditions and disease. That’s only scraping the surface of the importance of fitness.

Today, we have the benefit of knowing how important it is to incorporate movement and exercise in your life versus 30 years ago. We are also lucky to have the fitness tools and facilities at our fingertips. Taking care of your body and being healthy sets the building blocks for all the other areas of your life.

We couldn’t agree more. Health is wealth. If you could make one statement/change one thing about the industry, what would it be?

Looking at Muay Thai and Kickboxing in particular, there is a lot of misconception in public about the sport, especially for younger ages. Parents are concerned that their children will get hurt if they start practicing these Martial Arts. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth! At Elevation Martial Arts, we practice in a safe and professional environment. Honour, respect, and safety are at the forefront of our teachings.

There are countless benefits to participants of all ages: improved physical fitness, increased confidence and mental clarity, weight loss, self-defence, and a fun social environment to work out in. There is so much more. We can invite you for a visit and show you how safety, in both the physical and mental sense, is our number one priority!

Do you feel Physiotherapy is an integral part of fitness?

Muay Thai and Kickboxing are physically demanding on the body, and physio plays a vital role in both the injury recovery and prevention processes. As with all professions, not every physiotherapist in Markham is going to treat you as you wish. It is imperative to go to a reputable Physio who is able to address the root cause of your symptoms, not just superficially.

Thanks again, Ritch. We hope more people will try out the martial arts with the new found knowledge from this interview.
