Gerald Azzopardi, RMT at The Physio Spot – interview

By September 19th, 2025No Comments

Gerald is one of the best registered massage therapists Markham has to offer. We’re fortunate to have him at The Physio Spot. Massage therapy enhances physiotherapy treatment.

Physiotherapy involves the use of therapeutic exercise and physical manipulation. Deep tissue massage is often incorporated into physiotherapy treatment plans along with other techniques such as acupuncture, in order to increase the effectiveness of treatment.

We sat down with Gerald to go over why he decided to become a massage therapist and what he loves about Markham. We hope you enjoy the read!

How long have you been a massage therapist? Why did you start?

I became a Registered Massage Therapist four years ago. I had a couple other careers that I enjoyed, but it was not conducive to having family life. Family is extremely important to me. I have always enjoyed providing some form of bodywork and love what I do now.

What does an RMT do? Can’t I see a masseuse? What’s different?

In Canada, we don’t use the term masseuse to describe a massage therapist. A massage therapist needs certification and is regulated by the Ontario Health Act. A masseuse, on the other hand, is not regulated and can do a lot of unorthodox things when compared to a massage therapist. They can even cause more harm. It’s always best to see a certified and registered massage therapist.

An RMT facilitates the release of soft tissue. We work either from a light spa technique to a heavier deep tissue technique. Specifically, we can help athletes perform better with a deep tissue sports massage.

Why is a massage important? How does it work with physiotherapy?

Massage is excellent for releasing muscle in order to get full range of motion and comfort.

Most pathologies I see on the table are from a lack of use of full range that causes reduced range of motion and an ischemic reaction that can cause referring pain elsewhere on the body. For instance, a pain that someone feels in their neck may actually be muscle tightness on the opposite side under their armpit. An RMT will know how to release that tension, which may not be working the area in pain, but one that refers to it.

The combination of massage and physiotherapy is a fantastic 1-2-punch in order to gain total rehabilitation of the body’s muscular function.

What do you love about Markham?

Markham is a lovely place where family still means something and the education for our children is top-notch.

When you’re not working, what are you doing?

In my spare time I’m taking care of my family. My wife Lynsay and I have three children. Our eldest Lauren is 18 and our sons Gabriel is 3 and Theo is 1 month old. They keep us very busy, but what a blast. 🙂
