Why did you get into Physiotherapy?
I have been fortunate early in my life to have never experienced a major injury. However, a few summers ago, I suffered a herniated disc in my lower back, and I realized how debilitating it was to have a back injury. I was unable to move much without pain, which was very frustrating for me because I was unable to participate in the sports and work outs I enjoyed. It was a long recovery process through many ups and downs, but it was through proper physical therapy and exercise that I eventually regained my function.
Prior to this incident, I always had a desire to work in healthcare, as I believe it’s incredibly rewarding to help a client or patient recover and get better from whatever condition they have. My personal experience with injury helped me appreciate the importance of physical therapy, so I chose to invest myself in this field of healthcare. Now as a physiotherapist, it is my career goal to do the best I can to rehabilitate my clients’ injures and conditions and help them return to function just as I did in the past.
What do you love about Markham?
Markham is a city with a diverse food scene. No matter what you want, whether it’s Greek, Italian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, or pretty much anything else, you can always find a quality restaurant. I recently discovered restaurant Main St Greek, and they serve authentic Greek food. I like their moussaka and gyros.
What’s your favourite place to travel?
This September I traveled to Barcelona and Morocco, and it was the best trip I’ve ever had. I enjoyed the food, drink, culture, and just exploring the city in general. I got to try amazing traditional Spanish dishes such as paella and a variety of tapas. The sangria was great no matter which restaurant. The main street, La Rambla, was always live and entertaining and full of street performers. I saw the cathedral La Sagrada Familia, the famous scenic park called Park Guell, and many other beautiful parks in the city. If you ever travel to Barcelona, I recommend you bring some drinks and food up to the Bunkers of Carmel at sunset to enjoy a view of the entire city of Barcelona.
Morocco was a whole new experience with a culture I have never experienced. It’s an African country but the culture is steeped in European and Arabic influences. Traveling around was initially difficult. The locals mainly spoke French and Arabic, but eventually I got a hang of it, and got to travel to many different cities, including Marrakech, Rabat, Fes, and Chefchaouen. If you ever travel to Marrakech or Fes, watch out for locals who try to offer to guide you around the city, because they’re probably trying to hustle you for money. In Morocco, I went camel-back riding into the Saharan Desert, where I stayed overnight in a camp. At night in the Sahara, there was absolutely no light pollution, and you could see the sky clearly filled with stars.
What do you love to do when you’re not working?
I stay as active as I can. I grew up playing tennis and running track and cross country. I also enjoy basketball and Ultimate Frisbee, but when I’m not playing sports I try to get in a good workout at the gym.
I’m also always trying to improve my taco recipes. So far I’ve made some pretty good beef and fish tacos, but I’ve been inspired by the various kinds of shrimp and pork tacos from Seven Lives down at Kensington Market, and I want to replicate that for myself.
What do you look forward to at The Physio Spot?
As a new physical therapist at The Physio Spot, I’m looking forward to meeting all the clients there and doing my best to treat any conditions or injuries they might have. I always do my best to apply my skills to assess and treat my clients to help them improve and maintain their performance. I also look forward to improving my skills through continual practice and reflection and by taking professional development courses, so I can continue to serve the clients better.
